Vector Marketing Helps Students in Tough Job Market With Part-Time Jobs That Provide a Significant Edge in Job Search After Graduation

WILMINGTON, DE--(Marketwire - October 25, 2010) -  A recent study by the United States Labor Department indicates that the number of 16-24 year olds holding jobs in August reached its lowest levels since the agency started keeping these statistics in 1948. In August only 47.6 percent of 16-24 year olds had jobs.

This discouraging trend has resulted in students developing non-traditional employment and job search strategies that have included focusing on commission-based opportunities, majors that are more vocational, and selecting part-time positions geared exclusively toward "building" a resume.

"There have always been several schools of thought regarding part-time positions," said Sarah Baker Andrus, director of external relations and academic programs for Vector Marketing, the direct sales division for Cutco Cutlery. "Many college students view a part-time job as simply a way to earn money for the next semester. Other students view this time as a way to build a resume so they have a significant edge in the job search after graduation. These students are taking a long-term view, one that will help them down the road."

Baker Andrus has seen this phenomenon since the Vector Marketing sales force is made up primarily of college students who sell Cutco products through in-home personal demonstrations. The 61-year-old Cutco Cutlery is the largest kitchen cutlery manufacturer in North America.

"Our student sales representatives are learning a wide range of skills that will help them in future careers," according to Baker Andrus. "Many corporate recruiters tell us that when they see this experience on a resume, it gives those students a significant edge in landing an interview."

The skills cultivated in this type of position include:

  1. Making presentations
  2. Time management
  3. Team work
  4. Customer service
  5. Closing techniques
  6. Accounting and record keeping

The importance of these skills is further emphasized by a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), reporting that those likely to receive jobs are those with career-driven studies. The study cited accounting, business, computer science, engineering and the social sciences.

"Sales and how it relates to business is certainly one of those study tracks," adds Baker Andrus. "We also have seen a notable increase in recent years of college curricula offering sales as an emphasis."

Several universities, including the University of Calgary, Michigan State, and Purdue, have used the Cutco sales model in their senior-level sales management courses.

Even more encouraging for college students who view a part-time job or internship as critical in the post-graduate job search is another study by Manpower, Inc. This organization recently reported that 30 percent of U.S. employers had trouble finding qualified candidates in 2009 despite the large jobless and college educated population. The study further reported that employers are not just looking for candidates with the right education; they are looking for candidates with the "precise combination of skills and experience."

"Many of our sales reps and managers stay with Vector Marketing following graduation because they like the flexibility and entrepreneurial aspects of this opportunity," said Baker Andrus. "But others are recruited by major corporations who value the professional experience they developed while in college."
