Editors Note: There is a photo associated with this press release.

On Sunday, August 28, a member of the public observed an unusual snake at Greenwood Conservation Area, which was reported to Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) yesterday.

Since that time, the Toronto Zoo has confirmed that the snake is a venomous Copperhead, native to the United States. A photo (attached) was used to identify the snake. This snake is believed to have been illegally released.

The snake was last spotted near the Town's leash-free area at Church Street and Concession 5.

Members of the public visiting the area are encouraged to:

  • Exercise caution and not approach or attempt to touch the snake
  • Keep dogs on leash
  • Stay on marked trails
  • Report sightings directly to Town of Ajax Animal Services at 905-683-8275 or bylawservices@ajax.ca

The investigation is still ongoing and the TRCA and Town are working with the Toronto Zoo officials to learn more about the snake and determine next steps.

TRCA and the Town will keep the public updated of any new developments.
