Veteran Franchise Development Expert Sees More Franchise Area Development, Co-Branding If the Match Is Right

LAS VEGAS, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 29, 2006 -- George Goulson, former executive vice president of franchise development for Yorkshire Global Restaurants, formerly A&W Restaurants, and Little Caesar's Pizza, who is in attendance at the Multi-Unit Developer Franchising Show 2006 here, said that the future of multi-unit franchising is "area developers as opposed to master franchisee," but that he still sees room for "co-branding if... "

Goulson currently is the principal of George S. Goulson, LLC, a Bloomfield Hills, MI franchise development firm.

Goulson served with Yorkshire and their A&W Restaurants when the chain grew from 300 to 1,500 units. He was also instrumental in the acquisition of Long John Silver's by A&W. A resident of Bloomfield Hills, Goulson also served as vice president of non-traditional development for Little Caesar's Enterprises, Inc. Detroit where he established many of that company's co-branding concepts and non-traditional markets such as K-Mart, universities and airports.

"In an area development, the area representative for a territory or territories has the responsibility of building out the stores and operates them with a direct relationship to the franchisee and the franchiser," Goulson said. "I believe this is the trend as opposed to a master franchise agreement where the franchisee reports directly to the master franchisee and not the franchiser."

Goulson, who is currently representing Dollar Castle, Southfield, MI, Mr. Pita, Sterling Heights, MI, and Image Sun, Troy, MI, among other franchisers, said that there remains a future for co-branding, if the two concepts have different day parts and don't provide a conflict in the store operations.

The Multi-Unit Developer Franchising Show runs Wednesday and Thursday, March 29 and 30th.
