Veterans Affairs Canada: Commemoration of the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in the National Capital Region April 8th and 9th at the National War Memorial

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 5, 2007) - The National Capital Region will mark the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge with two events at the National War Memorial.

At 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 8th, there will be a commemorative ceremony to begin "The Vimy Vigil". The names of the 3,598 Canadians who gave their lives during the Battle of Vimy Ridge will be illuminated one at a time on the National War Memorial. The first name appears on the Memorial at 7:53 p.m. The names will continue appearing throughout the night with the last name projected at sunrise. The Vigil will be carried live on All Canadians can log on to learn what time a particular name or photograph appears and view the Vigil.

At 11:30 a.m. on Easter Monday, April 9th, there will be a National Ceremony of Remembrance and Wreath-Laying at the National War Memorial to mark the Anniversary. Her Excellency, The Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, will deliver remarks. The Silver Cross Mother, Senior Government representatives, Veterans' Organizations, and the diplomatic corps will participate in the wreath-laying. There will be a Veterans' Parade.

The general public is encouraged to attend these events to pay tribute to those who fought at the Battle of Vimy Ridge and to the more than 600,000 Canadians who served in the First World War. Of that number, two Veterans survive today, Dwight Wilson and John Babcock.

List of road closures for April 9th

At 8:00 a.m. the following roadways will be closed to accommodate the Veterans' ceremonies at the National War Memorial. The roads will remain closed until approximately 1:00 p.m.

Mackenzie Ave between Murray St and Rideau St. (access to Chateau aurier provided)

Elgin Street between Wellington/Rideau Street and Albert Street;

Queen Street between Elgin Street and Metcalfe Street;

Wellington/Rideau Street between O'Connor Street and Sussex Drive; and,

Metcalfe Street between Queen Street and Wellington Street.
