Veterans Affairs Canada: Ferryland Receives Funding to Conserve the Southern Shore Cairn

FERRYLAND, NEWFOUNDLAND-AND-LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Jan. 22, 2008) - Fabian Manning, M.P. (Avalon), announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a contribution of up to $3,252 to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #34 (Southern Shore). The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program, will be used to help restore and conserve the Southern Shore Cairn in Ferryland, Newfoundland.

"Cairns are symbols of the accomplishments of the many Canadians who have served our country during its times of greatest need," said Minister Thompson. "Supporting the restoration of local memorials is one way that our Government is ensuring that the actions of our men and women in uniform are remembered in communities across the country."

The Southern Shore Cairn honours those local residents who served in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. Funds provided will help remove loose joints and stones, replace the mortar, and replace the existing fence that surrounds the cenotaph. A new aluminium cross at the top of the cenotaph, with the inscription "Lest We Forget" will also be added.

"This cenotaph, which stands between the town hall and Legion Branch #34 (Southern Shore), has great importance for the community," said Mr.Manning. "The restoration work and new aluminium cross will bring new life to a memorial that stands so proud in Ferryland."

The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, Canada's war dead and significant events, are maintained with the standard of care and dignity that they deserve.
