Veterans Honoured at Canada Remembers International Air Show

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 20, 2006) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today joined Veterans, Canadian Forces members, community leaders, and members of the public for the Canada Remembers International Air Show opening ceremony. The event honoured the contributions of Veterans, paid tribute to fallen Canadian Forces members, and celebrated the significant milestone of the Royal Canadian Legion's 80th Anniversary.

"For more than a decade, the Canada Remembers International Air Show has demonstrated how proud Canadians are of our Veterans. Together we pay tribute to the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform," said Minister Thompson. "Today's event is an excellent example of how communities can carry the torch of remembrance and honour our collective national history."

The Canada Remembers International Air Show was created in 1995. It was originally developed as a part of the Government of Canada's national Canada Remembers Program saluting the 50th anniversary of the end of Second World War. It is considered one of Canada's largest annual salutes to Veterans. To date, the Air Show has educated and entertained an estimated 350,000 people.

For the last three years, Veterans Affairs has provided Partnership Contribution funding in support of the Canada Remembers International Air Show. This year, Veterans Affairs has provided a national Partnership Contribution in support of the Canada Remembers International Air Show documentary project, "Canada Remembers: Royal Canadian Legion Anniversary Tribute."
