Veterans' Issues Take International Stage

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 30, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, began meetings here today with international counterparts to discuss Veterans' issues. The 2008 Ministerial Summit on Veterans is being hosted by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and brings together ministers from the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

"Our mandate of honouring and providing service to Veterans is not unique to Canada, but is a shared goal around the world," said Minister Thompson. "These international meetings are an important means to both share our successes with other countries and to learn from one another how we might improve our own programs and services."

The Ministerial Summit provides a forum to discuss future strategic challenges faced at an international level. It is also an opportunity to share ideas and best practices in moving forward with programs in support of Veterans. Over the course of today and tomorrow, Minister Thompson will engage with his ministerial counterparts on issues such as the current mission in Afghanistan and various policy issues affecting both traditional and modern-day Veterans.

"These meetings are an opportunity to update other countries on the significant progress made on the New Veterans Charter, the Veterans Independence Program and other key programs in Canada," said Minister Thompson.

The delegation also participated in a wreath-laying ceremony this afternoon at Arlington National Cemetery. More than 300,000 people are buried at this national resting place, including five Foreign Nationals identified as Canadian.

The Ministerial Summit is the natural progression of the international collaboration which began in 2001 during the first Senior International Forum, held in Charlottetown, P.E.I.. Since that time, the five countries have made much progress in addressing common issues.
