Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson Improves Pet Health -- and in Turn, Data Shows That Pets Improve Their Owner's Health

TUCSON, AZ--(Marketwired - May 15, 2013) - The Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson (VSCT) notes that the most recent study from the American Heart Association (AHA) confirms that owning pets -- especially dogs -- is associated with fewer heart disease risk factors and increased survival among patients.

"I am proud that as a veterinary surgeon, I am part of a team here at VSCT that makes a positive contribution to not only the health and wellness of pets, but -- confirmed by the AHA findings announced last week -- also to the health and wellness of pet owners!" stated Dr. Barbara Gores, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons and a Founding Owner of VSCT (www.vscot.com).

As CBS News reported, "owning a pet was also associated with lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and incidence of obesity. Pets were also shown to lower stress levels." And the U.S. has a lot of dogs and cats: the American Pet Products Association 2011-2012 National Pet Owners survey reported that there are 78.2 million owned dogs and 86.4 million owned cats in America.

"In the final analysis," states Gores, "the people-pet relationship thrives for one reason: love. We love our pets and they love us. And if our health actually benefits in the bargain, so much the better."

VSCT delivers compassionate, comprehensive emergency and specialty care. At 32,000 square feet, VSCT is the largest veterinary specialty and emergency center in southern Arizona with an average annual caseload of approximately 20,000 patients.
