VHA Expert Advisors Advance Skills Through Collaboration With Institute of Healthcare Improvement

Data Analysis and Process Improvement Certification Enables VHA Hospitals to Achieve Better Outcomes and Exceptional Performance

IRVING, TX--(Marketwire - Nov 20, 2012) -  As hospitals nationwide adapt to new payment models and lower reimbursements, they seek expert guidance and actionable insight to improve their clinical performance and drive change. To meet this demand, VHA Inc., the national health care network, has collaborated with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement to provide its expert advisors with advanced training.

This fall, 30 representatives from all 14 VHA regions will participate in a professional development program and receive a Certificate of Completion for the Improvement Science in Action Professional Development Program. VHA worked with IHI to develop a custom curriculum based on its intensive program that enhances advisors' expertise in process improvement concepts, tools and methods and related analytics to drive and sustain performance improvement.

"Adding the science of improvement and IHI methodology to the skills and breadth of knowledge our advisors already have helps us to support our members no matter what clinical or operational challenges they may face," said VHA executive vice president, Byron Jobe.

In earning this certificate, VHA advisors will gain specific skills for developing, testing and sustaining improvement efforts in a clinical setting. They will also be better positioned to help member organizations identify the human and organizational dimensions that could accelerate or hinder their change initiatives. Finally, using advanced analytics, they will guide members in prioritizing initiatives that drive the highest impact for the organization.

VHA advisors will use the comprehensive presentation of data available through VHA IMPERATIV™ to advise members on topics such as population health, episode management and other areas of clinical and operational improvement possible through the performance management system. VHA IMPERATIV aggregates disparate data, generated by diverse departments, across the care continuum into one easy-to-use platform. Through its real-time integration of advanced analytics, coupled with advisory services, knowledge resources and collaboration opportunities, VHA IMPERATIV helps providers improve their clinical, operational, supply and quality performance.

IHI's health care improvement methodology is recognized and respected globally. They have been a valued cohort of VHA since the launch of the 1996 Breakthrough Series, a collaborative, team-based learning approach that enabled panels of experts to support dozens of hospital teams to achieve dramatic results in reducing costs and improving quality.
