VHA Hires Joan Evans as Senior Vice President

Evans Will Coordinate Delivery of VHA Services to Mountain States Hospitals

IRVING, TX -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 8, 2005 -- VHA Inc., the national health care alliance, has hired Joan M. Evans, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N., as senior vice president and executive officer over its Mountain States office, located in Denver. She replaces Fred Linville, who is retiring from VHA after almost 20 years.

"Joan has a tremendous heritage in helping advance the mission of not-for-profit health care organizations," said Curt Nononmaque, president and chief executive officer of VHA. "Her experience in health care leadership, strategic planning, quality improvement and early work in nursing will prove valuable in directing VHA's work to help members improve both clinically and operationally."

Prior to the appointment at VHA, Evans served for nearly two years as senior vice president of system advancement at OhioHealth, Columbus, Ohio. From 2000 to 2003 she was associate dean of strategic and program planning at the New York University School of Medicine. From 1987 to 2000, she held various leadership positions related to strategic planning, marketing and operations within St. Louis-based SSM Health Care, and she was a passionate and active champion in SSM's quality improvement journey. From 1982 to 1986 she was an administrator for health and emergency services with the American Red Cross in St. Louis. From 1975 to 1982 she was the patient services manager and strategic planner for the Visiting Nurses Association in St. Louis.

In addition to her academic position with the NYU School of Medicine, Evans has served part-time as an assistant professor with the St. Louis University School of Public Health and as a part-time faculty member with the Washington University School of Medicine's Graduate Program in Health Administration.

She is a member of the Society for Health Care Strategy and Market Development, the American College of Health Care Executives, and the American Public Health Association. Throughout her professional career, she has volunteered with organizations and served on boards that are focused on improving the health care services in the communities in which she has lived.

VHA's Mountain States office coordinates the delivery of supply chain management services and member network activities for health care organizations in 72 communities in northern New Mexico, Colorado, western Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington. A major strategic priority for members in the Mountain States region is the Superior Performance Initiative, which focuses on improving clinical quality, patient safety, the patients' experience while in the hospital, workforce issues, finance and operations, and community health.
