Vibrant Market for Online Services in STM Publishing

STANFORD, CT--(Marketwire - February 25, 2011) - Scientific, technical and medical publishing online services -- electronic products that link content with other types of data, software and solutions -- grew 4.8% in 2010 to $7.1 billion, helping lift the industry out of its recession-induced funk. A new report from publishing and media forecast firm Simba Information, "STM Online Services Market 2009-2010," projects this highly competitive market will continue to drive growth through 2011.

Growth rates for online services, which were sky high at the start of the decade, have leveled off considerably, but they are still higher than for other STM publishing activities, the report finds. Professional publishers see online services as a key to driving future growth.

"Content may still be king in the online STM marketplace," said Dan Strempel, lead author of the report. "But as other online markets have quickly learned, the amount of content one can offer is only as good as the tools and technology available to index and search that content."

According to the report, all of the top STM publishers -- Reed Elsevier, Thomson Reuters and Wolters Kluwer -- are well into a strategy focused on electronic media and workflow solutions as well as wireless and mobile content delivery.

"Demand for mobile access to content, especially from the medical industry, will continue to drive demand for services that are accessible on handheld devices," noted Strempel.

The report finds that the foremost challenge facing the industry is a decline in spending by libraries which is tightening up the academic market, forcing big players and other publishers to develop and offer more add-ons and features to remain competitive.

"Publishers have begun investing in search, personalization and other technologies to improve functionality and the overall value of their services to the user," added Strempel. "These include e-mail alert tools, saved searches and interface personalization."

"STM Online Services Market 2009-2010" breaks out the online services market into four categories -- Abstracting & Indexing Services, Content Providers, Healthcare Software and Services and Health Science Market Research -- and provides revenue estimates for STM competitor products and services in those areas. Coverage includes key products from Reed Elsevier, Thomson Reuters, Wolters Kluwer, ProQuest, American Chemical Society, IHS, Epocrates and others. It is available at:
