Vice President of Emerging Markets, Erika Smith, to Expand Socrata's Global Reach

Ms. Smith to lead Socrata's entry into new markets and partnerships around the world.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON--(Marketwire - Nov. 28, 2012) - Socrata, the leading provider of cloud-based open data systems, today announced the addition of Erika Smith to its leadership team. As the Vice President of Emerging Markets, Ms. Smith is charged with expanding Socrata's impact around the world and supporting a growing ecosystem of product and go-to-market partners.

An innovative business leader, Ms. Smith brings 20 years of experience, ranging from driving economic development at the World Trade Centers Association to entrepreneurial leadership at high-growth mobile startups, to leading industry solutions at global technology giant Microsoft. She served most recently as Worldwide Industry Managing Director for Local and Regional Government at Microsoft, where she developed the product, channel, and go-to-market strategy for the public sector business. Her efforts contributed to Microsoft's direct and channel partner sales and resulted in double-digit growth in a multi-billion dollar government sector.

"The open data opportunity is a fast-growing market that's gaining incredible momentum at every level of government around the globe. As we continue to build on our leadership position in the United States, we're also pursuing an aggressive international expansion strategy built around a thriving partner ecosystem. That ecosystem consists of civic developers, entrepreneurs, and world leaders in IT services, strategic advisory and software vendors. The data that is being unlocked is opening up tremendous new opportunities for innovative solutions to age-old problems in government," says Ms. Smith.

Besides building on Socrata's international success in Kenya, Italy and Australia, Ms. Smith will lead the creation of partnership programs, enabling other companies to create value-added services for Socrata's government customers and their constituents at the city, state or national level.

"We are moving as quickly as we can to fill the overwhelming international demand for Socrata's solutions. Erika has the track record, skills and leadership qualities to rapidly build out our global capabilities with partners. We're already seeing the results in new product and go-to-market partnerships with global leaders like Abt Associates," adds Kevin Merritt, Socrata's founder and CEO.

Finally, Ms. Smith will help Socrata deploy more resources into the open data ecosystem, particularly for developers who need support in creating sustainable apps that bring open data into people's every day lives.

Ms. Smith received her bachelor's degree from Vassar College and her master's degree in Economics from Cambridge University.
