Victoria Walk for Community Social Services promotes value of "invisible" sector

Attention: Assignment Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor VICTORIA, BC, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - March 15, 2011) - The third annual Walk for Community Social Services will bring together clients, self advocates, families, workers, service providers and community members to raise awareness about the important role these services play in the health of our communities.

From child care to group homes to counseling programs and life skills support, community social services make a difference in all our lives. They provide vital programs for women, families and youth in need, victims of violence, people with developmental disabilities, immigrant families and many more.

Here in Victoria these services are provided by agencies like Cool Aid, Community Living Victoria, Streetlink Emergency Shelter, the Victoria Women's Shelter and the Native Friendship Society.

The Victoria Walk is one of several activities taking place in cities and towns across B.C. during March. This year, more than 40 municipalities - including Victoria, Saanich, Colwood, Oak Bay, and the Capital Regional District - have issued declarations proclaiming March as Community Social Services Awareness Month.
