Video launch: If we accept Hydro One discrimination, who's next?

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 20, 2005) - Striking Hydro One professionals will hold a rather unusual video launch tomorrow-on their picket line!

"We want the public to know that we are a very diverse group," said Hamid Riaz, PhD, a professional engineer at Hydro One. "But we're a very Canadian one. We value diversity, all the cultures that come together in this country, and we absolutely cannot accept discrimination against young professionals."

The video depicts Hydro One professionals of many different backgrounds-immigrants, new Canadians, and Canadian-born-speaking out against what they commonly view as completely unacceptable contract demands in the Canadian context.

WHEN: 11 a.m., July 21st

WHERE: Hydro One headquarters, 483 Bay Street, Toronto

WHO: Hydro One picketers; Hassan Yussuf, Secretary-Treasurer, Canadian Labour Congress

Energy professionals employed by Hydro One have been on strike since June 1st, fighting Hydro One's unfair demands for a wage and benefit schedule that discriminates against younger professionals (22 per cent less in wages, 50 per cent less in benefits, and inferior pension), and an effective 11 per cent cut in wages for most employees.

The Society of Energy Professionals represents more than 6,000 professional employees in the electricity industry in Ontario, including engineers, scientists, supervisors, and others. The Society is an affiliate of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.
