Viewtier Announces Automated Inter-Branch Merging Technology for Software Configuration Management

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - August 21, 2007) - Today Viewtier Systems announced Viewtier Automerge, the industry's first technology that delivers automated inter-branch merges for Software Configuration Management (SCM).

Software organizations use branches to isolate changes made to codebase in order to support concurrent software development. Usually, it is mandatory that a fix for a defect is merged to all active branches. A growing number of branches leads to significant degradation of performance of a software organization because it has to spend increased time merging instead of delivering new functionality.

"Viewtier Automerge is a major breakthrough in Software Configuration Management," says Slava Imeshev, Viewtier's President and CTO. "Before, software organizations had to spend substantial time on doing inter-branch merges. Viewtier Automerge frees this time for core software development by merging, validating and submitting resulting changes automatically 24/7."

Technology Details

Built on top of Parabuild, Viewtier's Software Build And Release Management System, Automerge is using the last known clean state of the target codebase and a build configuration associated with it to run a validation build before submitting results of the merge to a version control system (VCS). Only merges that produced a successful validation build are submitted to the VCS. In order to select changes that are a subject of merging Automerge uses raw change information obtained from the VCS and also uses known the clean state of the source codebase. A build management system running integration builds provides the information about the state of the codebase.
