Village Voice Media Unveils 'Best Of ...' Hyper-Local App in Top 30 Markets

New App Enables Users to Explore, Discover and Share the Best of the Best in Cities; Increases Hyper-Local, Targeted Reach of Voice Local Network Advertisers

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - March 24, 2011) - Village Voice Media Holdings, LLC (VVM), which includes 13 metro-area alt-weekly print publications and 19 online properties, announces the launch of location-based "Best Of ..." app for iPhone. Developed in partnership with Seattle-based GoTime, "Best Of ..." will allow hyper-local discovery of the best attractions a city has to offer in Food & Drink, Arts & Entertainment, Sports & Recreation and Shopping & Services.

The application's initial features include:

  • Explore - Search through various categories in just one city or see the range of "Bests" across all 30 markets

  • Discover - Users can sort through categories and places by popularity or by location

  • Share - Each place page enables users to vote, "check-in" and opt-in to share via Facebook and Twitter; check-ins will appear on their "Best Of ..." feed and within their personal profile page

"Best Of ..." follows on the heels of GoTime's popular Happy Hours app and and VVM's popular City Guide apps that leverage VVM's award-winning editorial content focused on local nightlife, food, entertainment and lifestyle. The apps are built with VVM publications' core demographic in mind, and beyond VVM's 13 editorial coverage areas, application curators will recommend Best Of features by assessing other credible local lifestyle sources and reviews.

"Our annual 'Best Of' features are always a favorite for our readers and we get a ton of feedback about how valuable they are in helping people find favorite things in their community. This app packages that information so our readers can access it at any time, while on the go," said Scott Tobias, Village Voice Media president and COO. "Our readers are young, tech savvy, urban and connected and developing the 'Best Of ...' app is another way to give our readers access to the best that their cities have to offer."

Advertising partners such as Gothamist, Urbanspoon and Curbed rely on VVM's hyper-local Voice Local Network (VLN) platform to reach hard-to-reach urban audiences, and "Best Of" expands the multichannel reach of VLN. VLN combines mobile, print, online and street-level ad channels to produce comprehensive, customizable options for advertisers ranging from mom-and-pop local shops to national brands.

"Best Of ..." is now available for download in the Apple App Store and will be coming soon to the Android Marketplace, with mobile and desktop web versions available now for all users.
