Vintage Design Tips for That Shabby Chic Look

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 6, 2012) - This year, any interior designer will tell you; it's all about shabby chic. Gone are the clinical clean lines and minimalist contemporary styles. We're all embracing a real retro vibe. So, to make sure you hit the shabby chic style notes, take a look at our guide brought to you by Direct Fireplaces.

Focus on the fireplace

A fireplace adds a touch of old-school class to any living room or living space. Fireplaces for your home, whether made up of stone or marble fireplace surrounds instantly conjure classic retro style. Opt for a neutral palette in grey or white. Throw a shabby chic mirror on top and you'll be on your way.

Making the most of your living space, with a number of accessories is one of the first steps to achieving that shabby chic look with ease. Think floral patterns and delicate prints on cushions, throws and table cloths. This look is all about mixing and matching prints and tones of the same theme. Mixing polka dots together or a number of stripes is perfect.

Think wood. Shelves and cabinets should always be wooden. If you're painting any of your cabinets, opt for duck egg blue for example. Wicker or wrought iron chairs are also ideal to bring a touch of class to any room. You may have to soften them slightly, however, so add a throw or printed cushion to soften the look.

Bookcases are ideal for a vintage, shabby chic feel. Don't make the TV your focal point (if you even decide to have one). Make the focus on your hardbacks and add a few accessories here and there. A freestanding bookcase is ideal.
