Virident, AIC, Mellanox, and Quantum Deliver Film Makers Unprecedented System Performance to Support Next-Generation Cinema Experiences

High-Throughput Digital Content Solutions for Film Finishing Deliver Shared High Frame Rate Stereo Imagery From Shared Digital Content Storage Using High-Performance Flash Storage Technology

MILPITAS, CA and CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 16, 2012) - Virident Systems, a performance leader in flash-based storage class memory (SCM) solutions, and AIC Inc., an industry leading storage and server ODM solutions provider, today announced the availability of high-throughput digital content solutions for film finishing developed as part of their strategic partnership.

Also participating in this revolutionary solution are Quantum, which provides the high-performance "StorNext" file system, and Mellanox Technologies, which provides the high-throughput InfiniBand interconnect end-to-end solution to connect between the servers and workstations.

Film finishing applications often require huge amounts of I/O, which the combination of AIC's Max I/O and Virident's FlashMAX SCM technologies provide. This combination enables next-generation cinema experiences such as 4K digital film resolutions to be delivered.

AIC and Virident will demonstrate an integrated unconditional performance film finishing solution during exhibit hall hours at the NAB 2012 show, April 16 - 19, in AIC's booth, South Lower Hall, SL13915, Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada:

  • A shared unconditional performance InfiniBand flash storage appliance integrated by Ikranium Labs
  • 60 frame per second 4K video playback and editing Tweak RV workstation also integrated by Ikranium Labs
  • 24 frame per second 4K video color correction and playback via a Divinci Resolve workstation integrated by Whipping Post Services

An industry driver of the AIC/Virident high performance appliances is legendary film director, special effects supervisor, and inventor Douglas Trumbull, whose film credits include "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "Blade Runner."

"Next-generation cinema experiences will demand new levels of digital film resolutions and frame rates that are now becoming available with this technology. Because of the interaction of CGI and live action on the set, there is no room to wait for digital content to arrive for playback and editing," said Douglas Trumbull. "I am excited that technology is catching up to the speed of imagination."

The high performance AIC/Virident digital content appliances provide:

  • Real time streaming of multiple high frame rate, high-resolution digital film streams
  • Transparent integration with Quantum's StorNext software to editing workstations enabling staff efficiency and ultimately reduced cost
  • Virtually instantaneous setup time for production resources and staff

"Virident Systems is pleased to partner with AIC in delivering next-generation appliances for film finishing to creative legends such as Douglas Trumbull," said Shridar Subramanian, vice president of product marketing at Virident Systems. "We look forward to seeing our combined solution with AIC take cinema experiences to the next level and free creative minds from the constraints of technology."

The combination of best-in-class flash storage with maximum available I/O provides the necessary throughput for next-generation cinema requirements," said Sherman Tang, vice president at AIC - Server and Storage Solutions. "AIC is excited about the partnership with Virident and the new creative and cinematic experiences that filmmakers will realize through the use of our appliances."

"Achieving the highest throughput at minimum CPU overhead is critical for next-generation digital content appliances," said Gilad Shainer, vice president of market development at Mellanox Technologies. "We are happy to provide our server and storage InfiniBand and Ethernet interconnect solution to enable this technology breakthrough."

The custom-designed digital content caching appliances are available in a wide variety of configurations from AIC. For more information contact AIC at
