Viridian Health Management Announces Commitment to Deliver CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program as a Recognized Partner

National Health Coaching Network and Administrative Infrastructure Positions Viridian Health Management to Effectively Deliver Evidence-based Lifestyle Intervention Programs

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - March 25, 2013) -  Viridian Health Management, a provider of comprehensive health management programs that improve individual and population health, today announced its commitment to deliver the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Diabetes Prevention Program as a recognized program provider. In addition to serving as a key implementation contractor for the National Diabetes Prevention Program, Viridian's coast-to-coast network of trained health coaches and proprietary MAESTRO™ Population Health Management technology platform provide the necessary infrastructure to scale the National Diabetes Prevention Program in communities across the United States that have a significant proportion of individuals at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

"The National Diabetes Prevention Program is the nation's foremost evidence-based program for the prevention of type 2 diabetes. The CDC is working with community-based organizations, employers, healthcare organizations, providers and health insurers to expand the offering of the program nationwide. Our goal is to have the National Diabetes Prevention Program available to everyone at high risk for type 2 diabetes," said Dr. Ann Albright, PhD, RD, director of the CDC's Division of Diabetes Translation. "By working together, we can help many people, families and communities live healthier."

According to the CDC, approximately 25.8 million people -- 8.3 percent of the U.S. population -- have diabetes. If the current trend continues, it is estimated that one in three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050.1 To date, 79 million individuals are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and are 5-15 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Nationwide implementation of the program could save $5.7 billion and prevent 885,000 cases of type 2 diabetes. With an estimated cost of $245 billion2, taking measures to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes has become more than a mere health concern -- it's a strategic cost-saving objective.

The National DPP is based on the Diabetes Prevention Program research study led by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and supported by the CDC.  Results of this study demonstrated that lifestyle intervention to lose weight and increase physical activity reduced the development of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent during a three-year period. In addition, the reduction was even greater at 71 percent among adults aged 60 years and older.

"Viridian's experience in delivering health behavior change outcomes, a community approach to prevention and wellness, our national health coaching network, and our population health management data platform makes us ideally suited to expand the National Diabetes Prevention Program," said Brenda Schmidt, president and CEO of Viridian Health Management. "Viridian's expertise in both worksite and population health is a vital combination for the successful delivery of this initiative to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in communities across the United States."

Viridian will offer the National Diabetes Prevention Program in a variety of settings as the program is scaled nationally. Viridian is uniquely positioned to offer the program at convenient locations including worksites, central community locations, sites of worship and healthcare provider offices. Participants work with a lifestyle coach in a group setting to receive a one-year lifestyle change program that includes 16 weekly, in-person core sessions and six monthly post-core sessions. Through the program, Viridian teaches participants effective strategies for incorporating physical activity into daily life and eating healthy, as well as provides social support and lifestyle health coaching. A 5 percent reduction in weight and a minimum of 150 minutes of brisk activity weekly are the primary program goals.

Expertise in Diabetes, Wellness and Prevention
In addition to being a recognized CDC National Diabetes Prevention Program provider, Viridian is a National Diabetes Education Program  (NDEP) partner organization and a member of the  Arizona Diabetes Coalition. Schmidt leads the pre-diabetes workgroup within the coalition's leadership council, and will speak at the Diabetes Management Innovations conference in May 2013.

Also an industry leader in worksite health, Viridian is the implementation contractor for the CDC's National Healthy Worksite Program to help workers across the country increase physical activity, improve nutritional status, encourage health screenings, reduce tobacco use and provide incentives for the adoption of healthy behaviors. Viridian will leverage methodologies that have helped it achieve industry-exceeding participation rates of 75 percent in worksite wellness programs to create similar success stories implementing the National Diabetes Prevention Program within worksites.

National Diabetes Prevention Program Master Trainer & National Lifestyle Coaching Network
Viridian's extensive experience in training both lay health workers and health professionals in a variety of settings has resulted in a reputation for quality health coach training and culminated in a national network of health coaches. In addition to its own national network of trained health coaches, Viridian is currently training lifestyle coaches in Motivational Interviewing for all CDC National Diabetes Prevention Program grantee organizations, and conducting National Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle coach training for partnering organizations. Viridian will also train National Diabetes Prevention Program Master Trainers to continue to support program scalability through a network of master trainers and lifestyle coaches supported by Viridian.

Schmidt added, "Viridian's network of master trainers will add tremendous value to the program as we continue to scale this healthcare initiative. In addition, we also have added the National Diabetes Prevention Program training to Viridian's health coach curriculum for all of our lifestyle coaches, thus developing a broad network of National Diabetes Prevention Program-trained coaches across the U.S. who are trained in Viridian's evidence-based, proprietary HealthImpact™ health coaching system as well."

"Community programs are increasingly seen as the best way to engage small employers to support the health of employees, and ultimately contribute to the health of the community," said Schmidt. "Locally offered programs like the National Diabetes Prevention Program are a critical part of the effort to help those at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and reign in healthcare costs through collaborative partnerships between employers, business groups and community partners. The only way this will work is through a community model."

"Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.3 ," said Robert Eric Dinenberg, MD, MPH, chief medical officer at Viridian Health Management. "Interventions to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes can be feasible and cost-effective. Engaging and educating participants on physical activity, healthy eating, weight loss, stress management and diabetes risk factors can make a difference."

Dinenberg concluded, "We know the National Diabetes Prevention Program will work -- the evidence is compelling, and this is why we are so excited to be a part of this opportunity to help people avoid developing type 2 diabetes and live healthier lives."
