Viridian Health Management and Omada Health Partner to Launch Industry's First Multi-Modal Lifestyle Offering to Address National Diabetes Epidemic

Partnership of Online and Onsite Formats Provides Greater Access to the Clinically Proven Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Curriculum

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - June 20, 2013) - Viridian Health Management, a pioneer in health coaching for behavior change and provider of comprehensive integrated health management programs and Omada Health, a Silicon Valley leader in the field of digital health, today announced their partnership to launch the first multi-modal lifestyle program to help conquer the diabetes epidemic. This partnership was announced at the 73rd Scientific Sessions sponsored by the American Diabetes Association.

Omada's online Prevent program for individuals with prediabetes combines the integrity of a clinically proven curriculum, the flexibility and social support of an online format, and the expertise of a professional health coach. Viridian, a CDC-recognized program partner, is offering its onsite My Weigh 2 Prevent Diabetes™ program in 31 states through its national network of health coaches. The combined programs provide administrative services to support program implementation and claims processing. Both programs follow the clinically proven curriculum of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP), which is rooted in the National Institutes of Health-led study, supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The study found that by making modest lifestyle changes, participants lost 5-7 percent of their body weight and reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. Among participants age 60 years and older, the reduction was even greater at 71 percent.

"Together Omada and Viridian's joint industry offering supports the CDC's goal to scale the National DPP to workforces and healthcare organizations nationwide in either an onsite or online format -- or a combination of both -- to empower individuals to make positive lifestyle changes and improve their health," said Brenda Schmidt, president and CEO of Viridian. "Viridian believes healthcare is local and focuses on building community health by offering My Weigh 2 Prevent Diabetes™ at convenient community locations and facilitated by local health coaches that are part of our coast-to-coast network of trained health coaches. Additionally, we provide administrative services through MAESTRO™, our population health management solution, to import data, identify and outreach to participants, process claims and generate reporting."

"Omada Health is focused on rethinking disease management and creating evidence-based online programs that inspire lifestyle change and prevent disease," said Sean Duffy, co-founder and CEO of Omada Health. "Our Prevent program is designed to be intuitive, enjoyable and achievable. The program is facilitated by a community-based health coach. This approach effectively recreates the social support network of the onsite model."

Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions:

  • Nearly 26 million adults and children -- 8.3 percent of the U.S. population -- have diabetes.1
  • Prediabetes currently affects over 1 billion worldwide.
  • According to a recent report published in the March 22 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, approximately one in three U.S. adults over 20 years of age -- an estimated 79 million people -- have prediabetes, placing them at an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes.2
  • Approximately 30 percent of those who are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes will develop diabetes over the course of a decade.3
  • If the current trend continues, it is estimated that one in three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050.4
  • The average person with diabetes can expect to incur $13,700 in annual medical costs; that's 2.3 times higher than the costs of a person without diabetes.
  • In 2012, diabetes cost the nation $245 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity.

"Eight out of 10 cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented through the adoption of healthy lifestyle changes," Duffy added. "We believe that cutting-edge technology, innovative design and evidence-based programs can make a meaningful impact to reverse the rate of diabetes."
