The EE Times and EDN ACE Awards honor the people and technologies that have made a difference in the electronics industry. Finalists for the Ultimate Products -- awarded to the most significant products introduced in 2013 in 12 categories -- were judged by a panel of EE Times and EDN editors, as well as industry experts. For pyrotechnic engineers, Vishay's MEPIC resistor is specifically designed to convert electrical energy into heat energy in a precise electro-thermal profile for the purpose of initiating a series of pyrotechnic events in a controlled energetic reaction. To lower costs, the MEPIC provides an alternative to bridge-wire devices. Available as a wraparound surface-mount resistor in the 0805 case size, the device consists of a NiCr foil applied to an epoxy-based substrate -- an established technology used in the automotive industry -- to simplify the design process. Due to its extremely fine manufacturing process and automatic optical inspection, the MEPIC product provides a very predictable and reproducible behavior to meet no-fire/all-fire conditions while withstanding ESD up to 25 kV without extra protection.
