Vishay Releases New Oil-Filled, Hermetically Sealed Miniature Ultra-High-Precision Z-Foil Resistor, and High-Precision Bulk Metal® Surface-Mount Power Metal Strip® Resistor With Improved Load-Life Stability

Devices Offer Low Absolute TCR of +/-0.05 ppm/°C and +/-15 ppm/°C Respectively

MALVERN, PA--(Marketwire - June 27, 2008) - New resistor products released this month by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) include the hermetically sealed VHP203 miniature ultra-high-precision Z-Foil resistor and the CSM2512S high-precision Bulk Metal® surface-mount Power Metal Strip® resistor.

The Vishay VHP203 miniature ultra-high-precision Z-Foil resistor provides a low absolute TCR of +/-0.05 ppm/°C from 0 °C to +60 °C and +/-0.2 ppm/°C from 55 °C to +125 °C, +25 °C Ref., an excellent power coefficient ("delta R due to self heating") of +/-5 ppm at rated power, a tolerance of +/-0.001 % (10 ppm), and a load-life stability of +/-0.002 % (20 ppm).

The device's hermetic sealing eliminates the ingress of moisture and oxygen, while the oil acts as a thermal conductor, thus eliminating the long-term degradation experienced by elements in unsealed resistors, while at the same time allowing the device to accept short periods of overload without degradation.

The new resistor is built on Vishay's "Z-Foil" technology, which provides a significant reduction of the resistive component's sensitivity to ambient temperature variations (TCR) and applied power changes (PCR). Z-Foil improves stability by an order of magnitude compared to any other resistor technology, allowing designers to guarantee a high degree of accuracy in fixed-resistor applications.

With accuracy of +/- 0.001 % and long-term shelf life of 2 ppm for at least 10 years, the new device is optimized for high-precision instrumentation amplifiers, bridge networks, and differential amplifiers in high-accuracy products where humidity resistance and high stability are required. Typical end products include laboratory, metrology, measurement, medical, and test equipment.

The Vishay CSM2512S high-precision Bulk Metal surface-mount Power Metal Strip resistor features an improved load-life stability of +/-0.05 % at +70 °C for 2000 hours at rated power, an absolute TCR of +/-15 PPM/ °C from -55 °C to +125 °C, +25 °C Ref., and a tight tolerance of +/-0.1 %.

The CSM2512S's all-welded construction is composed of a Bulk Metal resistive element with plated copper terminations. The resistor element is designed to dissipate power uniformly in order to minimize hot spots, and is compatible with the lead material, resulting in a low thermal EMF of 3 µV/ °C.

Typical current-sensing resistors offer a load-life stability of greater than or equal to 0.5 % through a 1000-hour workload. The improved resistance stability of the CSM2512S makes it ideal for tightened-stability voltage division and precision current-sensing applications in switching linear power supplies, power amplifiers, measurement instrumentation, bridge networks, and medical and test equipment. In addition, the CSM2512S complies with EEE-INST-002 (MIL-PRF 55342 and MIL-PRF 49465) for military and space applications.
