"Visionary" Calgary Physician Awarded Canadian Workplace Wellness Award

Posthumous award recognizes outstanding contributions to organizational health

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 12, 2006) - Calgary physician Dr. Derrick Thompson was posthumously awarded the 'Canadian Workplace Wellness Pioneer Award' at the 10th annual Canadian Health, Work and Wellness Conference in Vancouver today.

The annual award is presented to a distinguished professional from the public or private sector in recognition of outstanding achievements in organizational health and wellness.

A national figure in the workplace wellness field, Dr. Thompson championed preventive healthcare in the 1970s, long before prevention gained support in the corporate workplace. He was renowned for his innovative approaches, and for continually probing and researching better ways to help people deal with their health and well-being challenges.

Dr. Thompson's progressive approach earned him a tremendous amount of respect, trust and admiration from the countless numbers of people he helped. He passed away suddenly in 2004.

"Derrick was a visionary and a pioneer," said Darlene Lavender, Chair of The Leading for Wellness Foundation, who accepted the award on behalf of Dr. Thompson.

"He was a tireless explorer of health issues, an authentic leader in his field and an educator who enthusiastically shared his ideas - and his successes - with other leaders in health, business, and government."

She said the work done by Dr. Thompson in the area of organizational health continues to resonate in the field, and was the inspiration behind the creation of The Leading for Wellness Foundation.

The Leading for Wellness Foundation was founded by Darlene Lavender and Sterling Eddy early this year. The Foundation is dedicated to enriching human health and well being by influencing leaders and leadership.
