Visionary Offers Expertise on Interaction Between Patient Safety and Malpractice Legal System

Richard E. Anderson, MD, FACP, Named Health Care Safety Speaker by National Patient Safety Foundation

NAPA, CA--(Marketwired - July 29, 2015) - Richard E. Anderson, MD, FACP, chairman and CEO of The Doctors Company, the nation's largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer, has been named a health care safety speaker for the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF). Dr. Anderson, a member of the NPSF Board of Directors and a medical oncologist, is available to speak to health care organizations nationwide on "The Interaction Between Our System of Medical-Legal Jurisprudence and Patient Safety."

The NPSF Health Care Safety Speakers program allows for visionary health care leaders to speak at internal or external events, retreats, executive sessions, and conferences about key topics in patient safety. All speaking fees are contributed to support the nonprofit Foundation's mission and programs.

"The interaction between medical-legal jurisprudence and patient safety is an extremely important one," Dr. Anderson said. "Though both systems share the stated goal of making health care safer, in reality, they are often in conflict with each other. The patient safety community is devoted to transparency and root cause analysis that can improve the entire system of health care. Our adversarial medical-legal system is opaque and based on assigning blame."

In these presentations, Dr. Anderson will also address how medical malpractice verdicts can distort appropriate allocation of scarce health care resources by encouraging defensive medicine or leading to legal rather than medical standards of care.

Before being named CEO of The Doctors Company, Dr. Anderson was a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and was chairman of the Department of Medicine at Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he served as senior oncologist for 18 years. He is the editor of a book, Medical Malpractice: A Physician's Sourcebook, and the author of a number of peer-reviewed publications on medical malpractice, the Harvard Medical Practice Study, and the impact of defensive medicine. He serves on the Board of Overseers of the RAND Institute for Civil Justice, the Board of Directors of the Physician Insurers Association of America, and the Board of Directors of Californians Allied for Patient Protection.

"I'm honored to work with the National Patient Safety Foundation to advocate for our shared vision of safer health care," Dr. Anderson said. "The Doctors Company has been committed to patient safety throughout our history and we consider this work to be integral to our mission to advance, protect, and reward the practice of good medicine."
