Visioneer "Where There Is A Need" Program Supports First Book

PLEASANTON, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 19, 2014) - Every school day, seven thousand students dropout. Annually, that adds up to 1.2 million students who will not graduate high school with their peers as scheduled.1 What can prevent this? Literacy.

Literacy is one of the best predictors of a child's future success. But a child without access to books won't have the chance to become an engaged and capable reader. Visioneer, through their Where There Is A Need Program, is pledging to help First Book end illiteracy by supporting their mission to provide new books to children in need.

Access to books is key to reading skills. Studies confirm that the number of books in the home directly predicts reading achievement. Children who grew up with books in their homes reached a higher level of education than those who did not.2 To date, First Book has distributed more than 118 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada.

According to their website, forty-two percent of children in the United States -- more than 30 million -- live in low-income households. Many of these children have no age-appropriate books at home, and the classrooms and programs they attend are woefully under-resourced. Approximately two-thirds of these schools and programs cannot afford to buy books at retail prices. First Book has pioneered groundbreaking channels to provide new books and educational resources at deeply reduced prices -- and for free -- to schools and programs serving children in need.

"As a parent and the spouse of an educator, I have seen first-hand the impact that quality materials can have on students in a classroom," said Greg Elder, Visioneer's CFO and Sustainability Officer. "First Book is transforming the lives of children in need. They are helping educators create enriched learning experiences for their students, and the children can enjoy an ongoing supply of wonderful new books."
