Visit to Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation on National Aboriginal Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 20, 2013) - Youth of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) First Nation living in the remote boreal forest of northwestern Ontario are opening their homes to Canadians to share their culture and showcase the spirit of their community. Her Excellency Sharon Johnston and Her Honour Mrs. Ruth Ann Onley have accepted this invitation and will attend the KI Event on Friday, June 21, 2013, on the occasion of National Aboriginal Day.

"I'm looking forward to engaging with these youth from KI who clearly show leadership and creativity in hosting other Canadians in their community," said Her Excellency. "It will be very inspiring for me to spend National Aboriginal Day with them. Their invitation is not only an act of openness, but also one of friendship."

In 2010, Her Excellency and Her Honour visited Eabametoong First Nation at the invitation of Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Stan Beardy.

Below is Her Excellency's detailed itinerary for KI:

Friday, June 21

11:30 a.m.
Arrival in KI
Upon their arrival in the community, Her Excellency and Her Honour will be welcomed by a youth from the Oji-Cree Nation.
KI Airport
12 p.m.
Official Ceremony
KI Chief Donny Morris and other community leaders will offer welcoming remarks to Her Excellency, Her Honour and other participants in this journey. Her Excellency will take this opportunity to thank the community for their warm welcome and this memorable experience.
In addition, Her Excellency and Her Honour will participate in the award presentation ceremony recognizing youth organizers involved in the planning of the KI event. The ceremony will conclude with singing and drumming performances by youth.

Her Excellency and Her Honour will join Elders, leaders and youth for a community lunch.

Her Excellency and Her Honour will participate in a discussion with Elders.

Artistic and Cultural Demonstrations
Community members will showcase to Her Excellency and Her Honour their artistic and cultural heritage with fish curing, drumming and craft demonstrations.

Tour of KI Community
Youth from KI will invite Her Excellency and Her Honour on a tour of their community with stops at the nursing station, the women's shelter and the community hall.
Canoe Excursion
Her Excellency and Her Honour will join youth on a canoe excursion on Big Trout Lake where she will witness first-hand the beautiful landscape of the region and the rich traditions and culture of this community.
Big Trout Lake
Her Excellency and Her Honour will attend a firework display in celebration of National Aboriginal Day.
