"We're on an amazing journey with our VMware NSX customers, going from only a handful of early adopter beta customers three years ago to exceeding 1,700 customers today that come from every region and every industry across the world," said Milin Desai, vice president, Product Management, Networking and Security Business Unit, VMware. "To be able to share this many customer stories, and showcase the evolution and diversity of use cases this year at VMworld, speaks volumes to the maturity and mainstream acceptance of VMware NSX as a platform for IT transformation."

Extending Innovative Software-Defined Infrastructure to Branch Locations

Columbia Sportswear Company is a global leader in branded apparel, footwear, accessories and equipment. Through a portfolio of brands (Columbia, Mountain Hardwear, SOREL, prAna), their products are sold in more than 100 countries. The flagship Columbia brand has been creating innovative apparel, footwear, accessories and equipment for outdoor enthusiasts since 1938, becoming a leading global brand by channeling the company's passion for the outdoors into technologies and performance products that keep people warm, dry, cool and protected year-round. Columbia focuses on innovation not only in its products, but also in its IT infrastructure. It has been an early adopter of VMware's software-defined data center and business mobility portfolio, including VMware NSX and VMware AirWatch®, as well as EMC storage. Columbia is now bringing innovation into its retail stores by partnering with VMware to build a fully software-defined infrastructure platform for its current and future needs.

"We are expecting to create better business agility through the innovation partnership with VMware," said John Spiegel, Global IT Communications Manager. "Key benefits we are looking forward to are the ability to lower our costs, deploy infrastructure faster and improve operational simplicity. The software-defined platform leverages innovations VMware brought to the data center and expands NSX beyond the data center into branch IT." David Nakashimada, Director of Retail IT, also added, "This is the type of innovation that's expected from our business, and VMware has been a key partner in helping us bring new solutions to our retail stores."

VMware NSX Helps Improve Customer Service, Data Security in the Public Sector

The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is one of eight secretariats that fall under the governor. Following an analysis to identify critical gaps in service and support, the team at EEA set forth on an IT modernization initiative. The team is deploying\ VCE VxRail hyper converged infrastructure appliances and VMware NSX network virtualization to consolidate four physical data centers into two active-active virtual data centers located within Boston, but with connections to all 370 remote sites located throughout the state. The new multi-tenant software-defined data centers will host all business and online applications, as well as serve as a central data repository. The transformation will improve the EEA's ability to protect their IT processes because security and networking can be tied to the function of each server and application; already, the ability for live migration of applications with zero downtime has enabled new levels of application security and availability. Centralized management, ease of data access and recovery and the ability to improve services with a limited, centralized staff were also critical to the selection of VMware and EMC solutions.

"VMware NSX will provide us with a network and security platform for the future, shrinking provisioning time, enabling high availability and limiting attacks by intruders," said Michael Valanzola, COO at EEA in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. "Today if we need to move a server from one data center to another, it is a process that takes days to complete followed by additional configuration at the final site, ultimately impacting the day-to-day productivity of our customers. With NSX and a software-defined approach, this process will happen seamlessly, thereby maximizing the efficiency of our limited IT staff and enhancing our customer support."

Protecting Data, Improving Patient Care with a Software-Defined Infrastructure

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is a leading information and technology-enabled health services business that delivers intelligent, integrated solutions to help modernize the healthcare system and improve overall population health. Optum developed a multi-tenant private cloud to support both internal Optum developers as well as external commercial customers based on VMware NSX network virtualization and the VMware vRealize® Suite. With VMware NSX, Optum is taking advantage of the platform's distributed firewalling capabilities and integration with Palo Alto Networks to improve data and application security. VMware vRealize Suite provides a comprehensive cloud management platform to help improve overall IT operations and automation.

"Our primary objective was to improve our security posture. Our existing security solutions were not meeting some of our new and evolving business requirements, and we knew we had to move towards automated processes," said David Snider, senior director, Foundation Engineering at UnitedHealth Group. "The combination of VMware NSX and VMware vRealize Automation is helping us improve overall IT and security operations to reduce risk. We are also more efficient and agile with a VMware-based private cloud."

Creating Competitive Advantage with a VMware NSX-Powered SDDC

TriZetto, a Cognizant company, provides world-class technology products in combination with Cognizant's consulting, IT and business process services that aim to simplify healthcare for consumers and improve operations for payers and providers. TriZetto's solutions currently touch more than half of the U.S. population and reach more than 300,000 providers. TriZetto is launching the next generation of its hybrid cloud solution based on VMware NSX and VMware vRealize Suite. These VMware software-defined data center technologies are delivering even higher levels of agility, application continuity and security, enabling TriZetto to reduce infrastructure provisioning time and speed the process of onboarding new clients. VMware NSX also allows for ease in moving customer environments between global data centers.

"As a provider of healthcare technology that works directly with payers and providers, we need a solution with capabilities to help us quickly onboard new clients and meet the complex, ever-changing requirements of the healthcare industry," said Rene Lopez, vice president of platforms and architecture for TriZetto. "Our VMware-powered cloud based on a software-defined data center architecture helps us meet those needs, as well as better positions us in rolling out new and differentiated services."

Modernizing Security Architecture in Financial Services with VMware NSX

Washington Federal is a national bank that operates 243 branches in the western United States. As part of an infrastructure modernization project, Washington Federal created a private cloud based on the Cisco UCS platform to host both the company's production and development environments. When evaluating security products for their new online banking platform, the infrastructure team determined a traditional hardware-defined approach from existing vendors would be costly and complex to manage. The company chose to modernize security with an integrated solution featuring VMware NSX and Palo Alto Networks 1000v virtual firewalls.

"With VMware NSX and Palo Alto Networks, we were able to significantly improve our customer-facing security posture, and drive security deeper into the infrastructure in a way that was not possible with a hardware based solution," said Brian Irwin, Program Manager at Washington Federal. "We also appreciated that the solution was significantly less expensive, as we did not have to purchase oversized physical appliances to accommodate for future growth. Our growth could be dynamically accounted for by adding resources to current Palo Alto 1000v's, and by the purchase of additional UCS blades. With assistance from VMware professional services, we were able to deploy NSX and the Palo Alto 1000v solution across two webhost environments in one month."
