Volkswagen Tiguan Wins AutoPacific's 2009 Vehicle Satisfaction Award

Survey of Owners Rates Tiguan Top of its Class

AJAX, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 22, 2009) - Volkswagen Canada announced that Tiguan owners gave their personal vehicle strong ratings to place it at the top of the Mid-Size Crossover Sport Utility Vehicle category in AutoPacific's 2009 Vehicle Satisfaction Award research.

AutoPacific's Vehicle Satisfaction Award (VSA) is an industry benchmark to objectively measure how satisfied an owner is with their new car or light truck and reflects the opinions of consumers.

The VSA Awards summarize the results of AutoPacific's 2009 model year vehicle satisfaction research. More than 25,000 consumers around the United States participated in the survey. The VSA is derived entirely from owner satisfaction which is measured across specific areas related to a vehicle's operation, comfort, safety, and overall purchase/lease experience. The 2009 ratings reflect input from buyers and lessees of new vehicles acquired September through December 2008.

"AutoPacific has conducted this industry research since 1997. Vehicles that score highest in AutoPacific's Vehicle Satisfaction Awards have hit the mark delivering value and satisfaction with their buyers by performing well in 48 separate categories that measure the ownership experience," says AutoPacific president George Peterson.

The Tiguan, the GTI of small SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles), features the "fun to drive" handling and performance which Volkswagen owners have come to expect from German engineering. The Tiguan comes standard with Volkswagen's 2.0 litre TSI(R) engine that delivers turbocharged acceleration while also delivering responsible fuel efficiency.

The Volkswagen Tiguan's award-winning TSI(R) turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 200 horsepower as well as 207 lb-ft of torque through a range beginning at a low of 1700 RPM continuously upwards to 5000 RPM to accelerate from it from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds in its 6-speed manual front wheel drive version.

The Tiguan's 2.0 litre TSI(R) engine features a dual overhead chain driven camshaft expertly controlling the variable valve-timed four valves per cylinder. This technology delivers precise and direct fuel injection for a complete system that optimizes the balance of power and economy. Its European-tuned suspension enables excellent handling while also providing a smooth and responsive experience for the driver. The Volkswagen Tiguan is available in either a front wheel drive or a 4Motion(TM) permanent all-wheel-drive version to suit a consumer's choice.

Recently, the Tiguan was rated one of the top small SUVs in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) new Roof Strength safety-test. The Volkswagen Tiguan also received the IIHS Top Safety Pick award, and top ratings in the IIHS front and side crash testing making it one of the safest small SUVs available in the market today. The Tiguan also comes standard with electronic stability control (Electronic Stabilization Programme, or ESP(R)), and six airbags including Side Curtain Protection(R)(i) in both the front and the rear. Rear side airbags are available as a stand-alone option.

(i) Airbags are supplemental restraints only and will not deploy under all crash circumstances. Always use safety belts and seat children only in the rear, using restraint systems appropriate for their size and age.

The 2009 Tiguan lineup reflects Volkswagen Canada's commitment to offer both excellent value and affordable German engineering. The 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan is available in Canada in three trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline.

The Trendline version of the Volkswagen Tiguan starts at $27,575 with a 6-speed manual transmission, and includes 16" alloy wheels with TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), 8-way adjustable front seats with a passenger fold flat seat, and 60/40 split folding and sliding rear seats with a recline feature.

The Comfortline version, including Volkswagen's 4Motion(R) permanent four-wheel drive system and adaptive torque distribution mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic(R), builds on the Trendline version and adds 17" allow wheels, a Panoramic power sunroof, and as well as a number of upgrades. The Comfortline version starts at $33,975.

The Highline version of the 2009 MY Volkswagen Tiguan adds many premium items on top of the Comfortline version, such as Bi-Xenon headlights with an Adaptive Frontlight system (AFS), a Climatronic dual-zone electronic climate control, 18" alloy wheels, as well as Vienna Leather seating and Sirius(R) satellite radio at a price starting at $38,375.

Based on Transport Canada estimates, the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan offers excellent fuel economy for a compact SUV: 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km) on the highway, and 11.2 L/100 km in the city in the 6-speed manual front wheel drive version. With the 4Motion(TM) permanent four-wheel drive system and a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic(R), the Tiguan achieves 8.3 L/100 km on the highway and 11.6 L/100 km in the city.
