Volunteer Toronto Receives $405,000 Project Grant to Spearhead Research Into Grassroots Groups

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - February 05, 2015) - Volunteer Toronto is pleased to announce they are recipients of a $405,000 Partnership Grant through the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade. The grant will support their "Grassroots Growth" project, a three-year project to build the capacity of volunteer-run organizations in Ontario. Grassroots groups, many unincorporated, typically address issues that are unique to their local communities, but are run with little to no budget and managed by collectives of people in their spare time.

"53% of all non-profit and voluntary organizations in Ontario operate solely through the efforts of volunteers and until now, our focus has been primarily on supporting non-profits and charities with paid staff to run volunteer programs," explains David Allen, Executive Director at Volunteer Toronto.

With grassroots groups rapidly sprouting up across Ontario, Volunteer Toronto wants to expand their reach and support their efforts by researching their diverse needs and creating accessible resources to help them manage the growth of their volunteer base.

The project will commence in March with the hiring of an Educator and Education Assistant. The resources will be piloted through the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council's (TRIEC) Professional Immigrant Networks to ensure the materials are accessible and comprehensible to a diverse set of leaders. The final year of the project will conclude with the launch of an online community that will house open source webinars, resources and downloadable materials.

Trevor Zeyl, Volunteer Toronto's Board Chair, sees this funding as a "new chapter in the way we support this important yet overlooked group of volunteers. With tangible data to help inform our resources, we will continue to meet our mission of creating the best possible volunteer experience."

Volunteer Toronto is a charity whose work strives to create a strong, inclusive, caring and committed community of people who willingly give of their time and energy toward building a healthy city. Their programs and services support non-profits, charities and grassroots groups across the city in developing sustainable volunteer programs.
