Volunteers to Rid Local Shorelines of Harmful Litter During the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

Halifax Residents to Tackle Shoreline Litter, a Major Environmental Issue, on September 21

HALIFAX, NS--(Marketwired - September 18, 2013) - Every September, tens of thousands of Canadians gather to clean their local shorelines of harmful litter during the annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, presented by Loblaw Companies Limited. A conservation initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF, Shoreline Cleanup is the largest direct-action environmental project in Canada.

To kick off this fall's cleanup week, a public cleanup event will be held at Point Pleasant Park in Halifax on Saturday, September 21. This cleanup will be one of 20 specially designated public shoreline cleanups held across the country in various communities to commemorate the program's 20th anniversary, and will feature special activities.

There are countless more cleanups that are being held this September. To date, over 42,000 Canadians have already registered to clean over 1,400 locations across Canada -- but the need for more site coordinators and volunteers to register is still great. This year's Shoreline Cleanup runs Saturday, September 21 - Sunday, September 29, 2013. Residents can learn more or register at www.ShorelineCleanup.ca.
