Vulcan Minerals Inc.: Robinson #1 Encounters Gas

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Oct. 6, 2009) - Vulcan Minerals Inc. ("the Company") (TSX VENTURE:VUL) is pleased to announce that the Vulcan -Investcan Robinson's #1 well, onshore western Newfoundland, has been drilled to a total final depth of 3560 meters. The well has encountered gas shows in several sandstones interbedded with shales and siltstones over a gross interval of 1290 meters. Initial interpretations from drill cuttings suggest the sandstone interbeds represent approximately 20% of that gross interval. Because the well is the first hole to drill these rock intervals in the Bay St George basin the full significance of the gas shows won't be known until they are adequately flow tested. Geophysical logs are currently being run in the well which will help prioritize the sands for immediate open hole flow testing. The Company intends to carry out an extensive evaluation of the well, including vertical seismic profiling, geophysical logging, sidewall coring and drill stem flow testing. This program has commenced and may take 6-8 days to complete. Results will be announced when available.

Vulcan -Investcan Robinson #1 is a frontier wildcat well that is the first deep well into the Bay St. George Basin. It has been drilled pursuant to a 50-50 joint venture agreement with Investcan Energy Corporation. The company is very pleased to have drilled this well to total depth in a safe and effective manner. Regardless of test results it is the joint venture's intention to case and complete this well to total depth. Based on experience in New Brunswick in similar rocks the well may need to be hydraulically fractured in order to fully test its flow rate potential.

Vulcan is a diversified junior exploration company focused on petroleum exploration in the under-explored Western Newfoundland and Labrador areas and also holds mineral interests in areas strategic to its operations in Newfoundland and Labrador.
