Wacky Helmet Designs-Are They Safe?

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Oct. 12, 2010) - Motorcyclists who like to be a bit different and wear wacky helmet designs could be endangering their lives warns Swinton Bikes.

The motorcycle insurance retailer surveyed 1,200 online customers and found that 16% had a wacky helmet design for special occasions.

For a biker the helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment they will own and while Swinton Bikes is not condemning wacky helmet designs, but is urging motorcyclists who go for this style to ensure they have an adequate safety approval rating.

Wacky helmet designs may not always be manufactured by approved companies, so it is a good idea to check before a purchase is made.

The Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme, SHARP is designed to asses all makes and models of helmets and Swinton Bikes is urging motorcyclists who choose a non traditional design to ensure it is safety approved using the SHARP rating.

Antony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes said, "It is imperative for a biker to protect their head, it is the most delicate part of the body in the event of an accident. While these designs are fun to look at, they also need to protect the head properly in the event of an accident."
