BARCELONA, SPAIN--(Marketwire - Feb 28, 2012) - MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS -- Apigee, the leading provider of API management products and services, today announced that the Wholesale Application Community's (WAC) new in-application billing API (application programming interface) runs on the Apigee Enterprise API management platform. This news underscores Apigee's momentum in the telecommunications industry, where companies like AT&T and Telefonica have adopted Apigee's API solutions to promote the development of innovative software applications -- or "apps" -- across a multitude of devices.
WAC, a global alliance of major telecommunications organizations, today launched its new In-App Billing API with eight operators: AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, KT, Telefonica Group, Telenor Group, Telekom Austria Group, SKT and SMART Communications. The API provides software developers with an easy way to monetize their applications across a range of platforms and technologies using a reliable, cross-operator billing service. The cloud-based Apigee API platform serves as the foundation for the delivery, management and measurement of the WAC API.
"WAC's first API will support the telecom developer community and merchants with a simple, cross-platform billing solution," said Chet Kapoor, Apigee CEO. "App innovation is happening at a rapid pace in the telecom industry, and APIs such as WAC's can make it dramatically easier for developers to create high quality apps, much faster."
Launched a year ago, WAC is a non-profit global alliance of telecommunications companies that is committed to creating a unified and open platform for the market of mobile applications. Its main goal is to simplify the development, distribution and sales of mobile applications across heterogeneous platforms and multiple operators via a unified software development framework.
