Wahl® and Petfinder Foundation Closing In on Finding Dirtiest Dog in America

Voting Period Now Open for Final 25; Top Dog to Win $5,000 Grant for Local Shelter

STERLING, IL--(Marketwired - November 05, 2013) - The search for America's Dirtiest Dog continues. Wahl and the Petfinder Foundation have narrowed down hundreds of submissions to 25 dirt-loving finalists. Now, fans can vote for their favorites, and in the process, help award thousands in grants to local shelters.

Through its Dirty Dogs Contest, Wahl and Petfinder Foundation are helping to promote dog adoption by putting a new spin on the age-old photo contest. Rather than asking pet owners to submit photos of their squeaking clean animals, the two pet industry leaders have been encouraging the opposite, and in the process sending a message that dirty is adorable.

"The majority of dogs entering shelters today are in need of grooming and only half will receive it due to limited resources," said Karen Hollish, program marketing manager for the Petfinder Foundation. "Thanks to Wahl and the Dirty Dogs Contest, we're not only helping to provide shelters in need with the necessary resources to clean up these animals; we're encouraging people to look beyond the dirt when adopting them."

Entries for the Dirty Dogs Contest were collected throughout October, otherwise known as National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Now comes the voting. Fans can visit the Wahl Home Facebook page and vote for their favorites once daily now through November 19. The top three vote getters will be chosen to win grants for their local shelter.

The winner will receive a $5,000 grant for their favorite local shelter or rescue group, and the top two finalists will receive $1,000 for their favorite local shelter or rescue group. Dirty Dogs Contest prize packs include:

  • First Place: The grand prize winner will receive a year's supply of Wahl pet grooming products, $100 gift card, plus $5,000 and grooming supplies awarded to the animal shelter or rescue group of their choice.
  • Second and Third Place: Two second place winners will receive a Wahl grooming kit, $50 gift card, plus $1,000 and grooming supplies awarded to the animal shelter or rescue group of their choice.

"By encouraging people to vote in the Dirty Dogs Contest, you're not only helping local shelters, you're helping to promote dog adoption," said Shay Moeller, product manager for Wahl Clipper Corporation. "We have an amazing group of Dirty Dogs finalists and can't wait to find out who will earn the title of Dirtiest Dog in America."

In addition to the photo contest, the Dirty Dog initiative is helping pet shelters across the country by providing them with much-needed pet grooming supplies. Throughout October, Wahl and Petfinder Foundation granted approximately 1,000 pet grooming products to shelters nationwide, helping to wash and ready 10,000 dogs for adoption. This grooming effort is not only critical to these dogs' overall health and well being, but it improves their chances of getting adopted.
