Wakamow Valley Authority Opens Assiniboine and Cree Pedestrian Bridges and Trail Expansion

MOOSE JAW, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Sept. 15, 2011) - Wakamow Valley Authority today officially opened the new Assiniboine Pedestrian Bridge, the retrofitted Cree Pedestrian Bridge and the new trail that links both bridges – funded in part by the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major infrastructure investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to have invested in this project, which will benefit both residents and visitors to Moose Jaw," said Ray Boughen, Member of Parliament for Palliser, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "The upgrades will increase trail usage and accessibility, and provide safer pedestrian access, while meeting the need for economic growth and job creation."

With funding of $314,624 from Western Economic Diversification Canada through the RInC program, the upgrades re-established a pedestrian walkway that links the parks in the Wakamow Valley and the Trans Canada Trail System. The Assiniboine pedestrian bridge, which lost its decking to ice and water in 1997, was rebuilt and the Cree Pedestrian bridge was resurfaced for safer pedestrian access. Finally, the pathway linking the two bridges was upgraded.

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada program invested $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, WD approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects helped provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
