"Waking The Warrior Goddess" Presents Women With Robust Options for Breast Cancer Prevention

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 5, 2013) - Angelina Jolie's surgical solution for her BRCA1 cancer gene mutation may not be the best option for every woman, in fact it may take many women down a very dangerous path. Dr. Christine Horner, M.D., a leading expert on breast cancer prevention will release the third edition of her award-winning book, "Waking The Warrior Goddess," (Basic Health) in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The expanded edition of her book includes the most current research on breast cancer prevention and a proactive 30-step program to protect against and fight the disease.

"What most women don't know is that their doctors are trained on surgical and pharmaceutical treatment of disease and only know the basics of prevention such as: don't smoke, don't drink too much, exercise and eat more fruits and vegetables," says Dr. Horner. "Although it's good advice, it barely touches upon what you need to know to prevent a deadly disease."

Known for her national crusade to pass a federal law requiring insurance companies to pay for breast reconstruction following mastectomy, Dr. Horner's Breast Reconstruction Advocacy Project (BRA Project) was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1998. The campaign was unprecedented because it was the first law Congress had ever passed requiring insurance companies to pay for a specific surgical procedure.

"I left a very lucrative career in plastic surgery when I realized my breast reconstruction cancer patients were getting younger and younger; and then after my mother died of breast cancer that was the last straw," says Dr. Horner. "Women have the right to know all their options when it comes to fighting and preventing breast cancer and there are simply not enough voices out there telling them how to do it. We're scaring women into making drastic decisions that could have damaging effects on the rest of their life."

Dr. Horner's book, "Waking The Warrior Goddess," details scientifically proven, non-invasive approaches that can significantly lower the risk of cancer including those women who have the BRCA1 gene mutation. Research shows of all the foods and beverages tested, caffeinated coffee lowers the risk of breast cancer in women with the BRCA1 mutation more than any other, up to 70 percent. Other cancer-fighting nutritional methods covered in her book include:
1.) Selenium, a mineral that helps repair DNA damage that can lead to cancer and can cut the risk of breast cancer in women with BRCA1 by 200 percent.
2.) AHCC, a natural substance extracted from several sub-species of Japanese medicinal mushrooms and the leading complementary cancer treatment used in hundreds of clinics throughout Asia. AHCC regulates the immune system to lower the risk of cancer, which has been shown to improve survival (http://ahccresearch.org).
3.) Omega-3 fatty acids found in certain fish, flaxseeds and walnuts, can lower the incidence of cancer spreading by nearly 500 percent.

Beyond nutrition, Dr. Horner says many women are increasing their risk of breast cancer by 50 percent or more by staying up past midnight when their bodies produce the highest levels of the anticancer, sleep hormone melatonin that can also suppress the BRCA1 gene mutation.
