Walking the walk for workplace cancer prevention

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Sports Editor OTTAWA--(CCNMatthews - May 27, 2005) - Marie Clarke Walker often talks the talk about preventing cancer. This weekend, she will walk the walk too.

Clarke Walker, Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress, will take part in the Second Annual Run, Walk & Roll for Cancer Prevention in Ottawa on May 28.

Part of the 31st National Capital Race Weekend, Clarke Walker will walk the 5 km route to raise money for the Women's Healthy Environments Network and to raise publicity for the best prospect of all for beating cancer - prevention.

"The main weapon in fighting cancer is change: changes in the workplace and working conditions, changes in food production, changes in environmental protection, and changes to society itself. The most effective way to fight cancer is to prevent it and eliminate exposure to the substances that cause it," says Clarke Walker.

That's why the Canadian Labour Congress, working with the country's largest unions, started the Cancer Prevention campaign a few years ago. The campaign helps workers build a plan for reducing their risk of being exposed to cancer-causing materials on the job. A campaign guidebook shows how to gather and organize information about workplace cancer hazards and how to work with employers to reduce or eliminate them completely.

More information about the Prevent Cancer campaign is available at www.clc-ctc.ca. Marie Clarke Walker's walk starts on Saturday, May 28 at 5:00 p.m. at the corner of Laurier Avenue and Elgin Street.

The Canadian Labour Congress, the national voice of the labour movement, represents 3 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together Canada's national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 137 district labour councils.
