Walther Farms Focus on Potatoes Leads to Sale of Family's Original Farm

BIRCH RUN, MI--(Marketwire - February 18, 2009) - Walther Farms, the potato farming giant that started with a few acres of vegetables in the 1940s, will sell approximately 784 acres -- including the family's original farm property -- at auction Monday, March 16, as a result of the family's increasing focus on the potato business. Schrader Auction Company, of Columbia City, Ind., will manage the sale.

"Grandma and Grandpa always believed in putting the land to its best possible use, and we're following the same strategy by putting this excellent land in the hands of people whose focus is on crops such as sugar beets, soybeans, corn and wheat, for which the soil types are best suited," said Jason Walther, president of Walther Farms.

The sale will include seven farms between Saginaw and Flint, Mich., largely made up of high-quality farmland, according to Ed Boyer, who is managing the project for Schrader. The land is well tiled and irrigated, ensuring productivity during wet and dry periods, Boyer said.

The sale also includes several sites suited for commercial, recreational and development, as well as for building. The property also has six Valley Center Pivot irrigators.

"This land will sell in 27 different tracts, ranging from approximately 1.2 acres to approximately 228 acres. Bidders will have the opportunity to purchase individual tracts as well as combinations of tracts, so there will be opportunities for large and small buyers alike," said Boyer.

Walther, whose firm was named Frito-Lay's National Potato Supplier of the Year in 2008, has extensive operations in Michigan, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana and Mexico, but the family's roots are in the Birch Run area, where the family started as hobby farmers growing vegetables.
