On May 7, 2010, at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, on the occasion of the UNIES pour la SP/WAMS gala luncheon, the Quebec Division of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada paid tribute to a woman who is renowned for her professional achievements and philanthropic commitment to the community: Jacynthe Côté, chief executive of Rio Tinto Alcan. The recipient of the WAMS Award of Distinction for 2010—a woman who is both discreet and dynamic—represents not only those women of action who have made their mark in the business world but also those who are ready to act now for a future without multiple sclerosis. The event, which brought together almost 500 guests, raised $185,000 to support research into a cure for MS and enable people with this disease to improve their quality of life.

A meeting of influential women

The fourth edition of the gala luncheon also welcomed nine outstanding personalities, and participants at the VIP tables were able to talk with them. In addition to Jacynthe Côté, guests had the privilege of meeting Sophie Thibault, MS Ambassador and the event's MC; Christiane Bergevin, executive vice-president, strategic partnerships, office of the president of Desjardins Group; Johanne Lépine, president and chief executive officer of AON Parizeau; Michèle Boisvert, assistant managing editor, business section of La Presse and Cyberpresse; Monique Jérôme-Forget, special advisor, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, and guest fellow at CIRANO; Jocelyne Cazin, journalist, host and lecturer; Isabelle Hudon, president of Marketel; and the Honourable Céline Hervieux-Payette, senator. These prestigious guests, who inspire and motivate professional women, generously expressed their support for the cause of multiple sclerosis, a neurological disease that affects three times as many women as men.

WAMS—for a future without MS

The Quebec Division of the MS Society is proud that its supporters include these great ladies, who have opened doors and blazed trails for the women who follow them. Thanks to their leadership and their wonderful charitable instincts, they will certainly be able to advance the cause. Like them, the members of the committee support this campaign with all their hearts and are among the many active women who have banded together to end multiple sclerosis.

The WAMS campaign

The campaign was founded in the United States in 1999 under the name of WAMS (Women Against Multiple Sclerosis). It was launched by committed women who wanted to contribute to the battle against multiple sclerosis in their own unique way. The Quebec version, UNIES pour la SP, was started by professional women in the Montreal area in the fall of 2006. The Quebec campaign has been an undeniable success: since its inception, it has raised $640,000.
