TORONTO--(Marketwire - Sep 20, 2012) - Movember, the global charity that raises funds and awareness for men's health, kicks off its 6th annual campaign today, challenging men and women from across Canada to join the movement and register at Movember.com. Last year, Canadians embraced the moustache with 246,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas raising $42 million, making Canada the top fundraising nation in the world. Funds raised are invested in programs run directly by Movember and our men's health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada, in the areas of prostate cancer awareness and education, survivorship and research.
This year, Movember is proud to announce that it will address both prostate cancer and male mental health. Mental health is a new addition for Movember Canada and a critical issue for Canadian men.
- 1 in 5 of Canadian men are affected by mental health issues each year
- 4 out of 5 suicides among young people in Canada are committed by men, despite men's lower reported rates of depression
- 1 in 4 cancer patients experience clinical depression
- The risk of suicide in men with prostate cancer is over 4 times that of a similarly aged man without prostate cancer

Movember will address male mental health through its new initiative, the Canadian Male Health Network (CMHN). The CMHN was created to address critical male health issues and brings together some of the top scientific and medical professionals from across the country. Chaired by Dr. Larry Goldenberg, a thought leader in prostate cancer and male health, the CMHN will identify the priority areas in the Canadian male mental health sphere. Funds raised from Movember 2012 and beyond will be invested in these areas in addition to prostate cancer.

Getting involved in Movember is simple -- starting today, men and women can register to join the campaign at www.movember.com. Whether on their own or as part of a team, they have the month of November to grow and show their Mo. Friends, family, and colleagues can show their support by sponsoring the Mo-growing efforts and donating funds to support Movember. Women who register are key to the campaign's success. They act as ambassadors for the Mo, spreading the word about men's health and showing their support for the men in their life. Participants celebrate their "Mo" at the end of November, attending Movember's official Gala Partés or hosting their own local event. The campaign is largely run online, making it a unique digital charity campaign.
Movember funds are hard at work.
