Washington Convention Center Hotel Creating Jobs Days Before Opening

Marriott Marquis Washington, DC Set to Open May 1

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - Apr 29, 2014) - Establishing an exciting new epicenter for downtown Washington, D.C., a new Marriott hotel is set to open May 1, 2014 and has already created hundreds of jobs as many labor at the task of turning the "Plumbers Building" into a sleek new luxury hotel.

Utilizing innovative designs, the project incorporates the site's original historic Samuel Gompers AFL-CIO headquarters, known as the "Plumbers Building" in creating the Marriott Marquis Washington, DC with 1,175 rooms. Boasting 49 suites and more than 105,000 square feet of function space, including a 30,000-square-foot Marquis Ballroom with 22-foot ceilings and two junior ballrooms, these exciting new Washington, D.C. accommodations are designed to earn LEED® Silver accreditations and will be recognized as one of the largest hotels in the country to earn the eco-friendly distinction.

Marriott Marquis Washington, DC will be conveniently located next door to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and connected via an underground concourse to the facility, creating an epicenter of the downtown district. The dynamic hotel property will transform the neighborhood and introduce a new and exciting venue for social gatherings, business travelers, meetings and conventions. Featuring a grand atrium lobby, a state-of-the-art bi-level fitness center and five separate retail and restaurant spaces, the D.C. city center hotel will also serve as a brand-new social hub for local residents.

As construction workers put finishing touches on the Penn Quarter hotel, thousands of Washingtonians turned out at a recent training program for jobs at the new hotel. In seeking employees, Marriott executives have joined forces with local D.C. agencies and nonprofits, including Goodwill of Greater Washington, in an unprecedented effort to impact individuals with life supporting careers. Acting on what Marriott expects to be the new way in which talent acquisition takes place, the Bethesda-based hospitality company is also hoping to gain the edge in attaining millennial generation employees with a new mobile application site that not only allows job seekers to view jobs available, but also offers them the opportunity to apply for positions via mobile devices.
