Water Watch to quiz Abbotsford Council

ABBOTSFORD, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 12, 2011) - Water Watch Mission-Abbotsford (WWMA) is addressing Abbotsford City Council tonight on public water and P3s. The delegation wants details about a recent poll, specifics about proposed water project funding and a pledge to protect public water.

The WWMA delegation will be asking Council for details about a recent public poll on the proposed Stave Lake P3 project. The proposed public private partnership (P3) project will be a referendum question in the November civic elections.

Specifically, WWMA will be asking Council to make public the recent survey questions and the process that led to the survey, as well as how much public money was spent and who framed the questions. WWMA has serious concerns about the poll that many respondents consider to be tainted by biased questions.

The delegation will also ask the City for clarification of any publicly-funded publicity plans for the Stave Lake P3 proposal. The delegation wants a pledge to keep the residents/taxpayers of Abbotsford informed of the status of any Stave Lake P3 application to PPP Canada and to tell us if it has sought other government funding and delivery methods for our water supply.

WWMA representatives will ask the mayor and council to support a resolution from municipalities across British Columbia to be raised at the upcoming Union of BC Municipalities meeting that calls on the federal government to provide funding for public water infrastructure and delivery projects.

WWMA says that "municipalities are being told by the federal government that they either privatize their water services or they will not receive funding for water projects. This is coercive and unfair. The federal government should not be demanding that communities sell off their vital public services to be operated for private profit."
