The Web Analytics Association Calls on Industry for Commentary on Social Media Standards Definitions

WAKEFIELD, MA--(Marketwire - February 25, 2010) - Today, the Web Analytics Association (WAA) released for public comment its suggested standard definitions for measuring the technologies that facilitate social media advertising, marketing and communications. For the next 60 days, the WAA invites the global web analytics, social media and online advertising communities to discuss and comment on the definitions before creating a final draft.

After extensive deliberation and review, the social media standards document is designed to provide a framework around measuring technologies that support social media, such as blogs, widgets and social bookmarking, or sharing. Because social media is continually evolving, the WAA intends to expand upon the standard definitions as more social media interactions become measurable within web analytics tools.

In an effort to gain broader input and facilitate open discussion over the next 60 days, the WAA invites commentary to its blog from the online marketing, social media and analytics industry. The industry is also invited to email the WAA committee responsible for the social media standards with specific comments and recommended changes.

"Standards are the foundation upon which comparative measurement, assessment and analysis relies, and ultimately, upon which investment decisions are made," said Alex Langshur, president of the WAA. "The social media space has been evolving so rapidly that it's been somewhat of a moving target, and we've seen a lot of definitions and measurement approaches over the past few years. Our goal is to put forward a common understanding on standards for social media measurement that reflects the wide input from those who are active in the field. It's therefore really important that we get the community to engage, discuss and debate the draft document, which ultimately will make for a stronger, more robust outcome that is embraced by all those involved in the digital measurement sector."
