Webster Bank Joins Movement to Encourage People to Save

Special Workshops and Savings Promotions Will Be Offered Online and in Branches During America Saves Week, Feb. 21 - 28

WATERBURY, CT--(Marketwire - February 18, 2011) - Webster Bank (NYSE: WBS), a leading New England financial institution, has joined "America Saves Week," a nationwide campaign to help Americans increase their savings rates.

"Webster joins more than 1,800 organizations in 47 states in this effort to teach everyone -- regardless of age or income level -- how a regular savings plan is an essential part of financial security," said Anne Slattery, executive vice president of retail banking. "We have tools that can make it easy for anyone to start saving, and our bankers are eager to teach everyone how to use them."

"We are at a critical moment," said Nancy Register, executive director of America Saves at the nonprofit Consumer Federation of America. "While we see the first hints of a recovery, too many Americans are not saving enough for emergencies, retirement, home buying or other mechanisms for building wealth. With our motto 'Start Small, Think Big,' we want everyone to know that they can build toward a goal."

From February 21 - 28, Webster will run special promotions in all branch offices and online. Many Webster branches will offer free workshops on topics ranging from social security and saving for retirement to college savings and savings advice for young adults. A complete schedule and other tools, such as a savings calculator, can be found on the website
