The unrest in Egypt has taken an ominous turn on Wednesday as thousands of pro-government supporters clashed with thousands of anti-government protestors in bloody street battles, in a bid to control Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo. The square is the traditional place where protests have been held over the past decades and has been the focus of demonstrations against President Mubarak during the past week.

****NEWS ANALYSIS***Wider implications of unrest in Egypt

Widespread protests in Egypt may have far reaching global consequences. For almost a week now protestors in Egypt have taken to the streets in an effort to force the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. Scores have been killed and thousands injured in the violent clashes between civilians and government forces. As the protests intensify, there is fear that the country may descend into chaos threatening a vital shipping chokepoint, the Suez Canal. Every day 7% of the world's goods pass through this vital waterway. If the canal were to shut down, the shipping traffic would have to be re-routed around the Horn of Africa causing a delay of 14 to 17 days in the delivery of goods.
