Welland - Ontario Federation of Labour News Conference Job Losses

News Conference, Friday, October 10, 2008 at 11:30 a.m., CAW Hall, 16 Steel Street, Welland, Ontario

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, Media Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - Oct. 10, 2008) - Welland is the fifth Ontario city on OFL President Wayne Samuelson's tour of Ontario communities that have been hit hard by manufacturing job losses. The losses in the last two years alone are devastating for this city of 45,000 people.

"When Stephen Harper was campaigning in Welland over two weeks ago, he didn't even talk about manufacturing job losses in this area," said OFL President Wayne Samuelson. "Instead he chose to talk about banana-flavoured tobacco."

"I want to talk about jobs," said Samuelson. "The jobs that have been lost, the plants that are closed down and what the future holds for the workers in this area."

The number of manufacturing plants that have closed their doors in the last two years alone shows the depth of the job crisis, the failure of the unemployment insurance system and the plunge in wages for workers who have lost good manufacturing jobs and are now forced to take low-wage survival work.

"How can Harper say that Canadians aren't worried about job losses? He should talk to the workers of this province, talk to the workers in Welland - they're worried about the economy, their jobs, their mortgages and their future. Harper is arrogant and out of touch."
