WellPoint Foundation Awards $195,000 Grant to Nonprofit to Run Country's Only Uninsured Help Line

Foundation for Health Coverage Education Simplifies Enrollment Process for Nation's 15 Million Uninsured Who Are Eligible for Government Programs

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - January 12, 2011) - With the implementation of Health Care Reform legislation set to roll out over the next 3 years, current efforts to educate uninsured Americans will continue. To this end, the Foundation for Health Coverage Education (FHCE), www.coverageforall.org, has been awarded a $195,000 grant from the WellPoint Foundation, www.wellpointfoundation.org, the philanthropic arm of WellPoint, Inc. The grant will help pay for the day-to-day operations of FHCE's toll-free U.S. Uninsured Help Line, (800-234-1317) and assist in maintaining its Health Care Options Matrix, an up-to-date public/private health coverage guide to assist people looking for coverage options.

As the Help Line's sole sponsor, the WellPoint Foundation has increased funding by an additional $1,000 per month due to the nearly 25% increase in calls during 2010 over 2009. Since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), the Help Line has seen an uptick in health insurance questions, and aims to continue providing the uninsured with answers regarding eligibility and government-sponsored programs.

"The WellPoint Foundation is dedicated to working with organizations to identify and target public health concerns," said Lance Chrisman, Executive Director of the WellPoint Foundation. "Our grant will keep the phone lines staffed and operating at the FHCE's U.S. Uninsured Help Line, so that uninsured Americans can learn about their eligibility status and enroll in established government health programs. Not only will this ensure that more Americans have access to high quality care, but it will also help reduce the overall cost of care."

Individuals with questions about health coverage can visit CoverageForAll.org and take a simple 5-Question Eligibility Quiz or call the 24/7 multi-lingual U.S. Uninsured Help Line to talk with a counselor who will review the questions with them. This eligibility review is a starting point for the Fresno, California-based call center's counselors who guide each caller through their options and direct them to the appropriate state-sponsored programs.

"The FHCE has assisted over 2 million consumers with understanding their health coverage eligibility status, available public programs, and health care reform through CoverageForAll.org and our U.S. Uninsured Help Line," said Ankeny Minoux, President of the FHCE. "With funding from the WellPoint Foundation, the FHCE can continue to educate uninsured Americans about their health coverage options."
