Western Colorado RHIO Completes Formation and Technology Deployment in Eight Months

Quality Agenda Drives Connection and Interoperability, Using Axolotl's Technology

GRAND JUNCTION, CO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 14, 2005 -- Quality Health Network (QHN) announced today the successful launch of operations of its regional health information exchange -- which links local hospitals and other healthcare participants together electronically. In eight months, Quality Health Network completed its formation, legal processes, addressed privacy and security issues, technology deployment, and began information exchange between providers. The nonprofit organization's network infrastructure and software, provided by Axolotl Corporation of Mountain View, California, includes an electronic medical record for physicians, a secure community-wide data repository, electronic lab ordering, electronic prescribing, and disease registry databases to facilitate the identification and treatment of "at-risk" patients. With initial sites live, QHN will accelerate the rollout to include three hundred local physicians in Mesa County -- more than seventy percent of whom are now in process of activating. 2006 plans include the expansion of the service area to include more than one thousand physicians in the Western Colorado area.

"Our goal is to optimize the community's health, eliminate redundancies, improve efficiencies and improve the satisfaction of patients and providers in western Colorado," stated Dick Thompson, executive director of Quality Health Network. "Our local hospitals, health plan, and physician groups collaborated to bring this endeavor to fruition. Axolotl's experience and the timely insights from their other RHIO customers helped us develop a process to streamline deployment. We think the process we established could accelerate success in other communities."

"We are thrilled that the initial group of physicians and staff are quickly benefiting from the community's initiative to improve patient care and safety and that they are finding our technology intuitive and easy to use," stated Raymond Scott, CEO of Axolotl. "QHN participants, like our other customers, are seeing real results, including improved timeliness, quality, and cost-effectiveness of their healthcare delivery system."

"Our practice has been looking for EMR software for over five years. Either the cost was prohibitive, or we were sacrificing functionality. Axolotl's EMR was a perfect fit," stated Lance Reynoso, MD, faculty member and medical director of St Mary's Family Practice and president of CareNet. "Communication with each other and patients is streamlined, and all of our patient data is in one place, eliminating lost reports and chart chasing and improving patient care."

"The system is outstanding, its like magic," stated Ivan Alkes, MD, an independent physician. The newly deployed collaborative network provides instant access to patient test results with tools to manage and share that data. The prescription-writing capability provides automatic checks to avoid potential negative drug interactions with medications already prescribed, in addition to checking for generic drug availabilities and prices. Once a prescription is electronically approved, it can be automatically routed to the patient's desired pharmacy via the network.
