WesternU President Lauded by California Governor

POMONA, CA--(Marketwire - January 5, 2011) - Western University of Health Sciences President Philip Pumerantz, PhD, received high praise from former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who left office on Monday, Jan. 3.

In a proclamation sent in December, the governor praised Dr. Pumerantz's leadership and service to California and to health care.

"It is a pleasure to extend my gratitude for your years of service to the osteopathic medical community," states the proclamation, which is signed by Schwarzenegger.

"Your distinguished career is a testament to your outstanding mentorship of your peers and extensive contributions to the medical community. Your ability to balance a wide range of roles is admirable and you have earned the respect and admiration of your peers. Your work will have a tremendous impact on future generations of Californians and you are truly an inspiring example to all of us.

"I applaud your tireless efforts to offer innovative solutions to California's and our nation's health care challenges. Your input and expertise continue to be of critical value to our state, and I commend you for mentoring some of California's most talented researchers and health care leaders.

"Again, congratulations, and please accept my wishes for every continued success."

Dr. Pumerantz is the founding president of Western University of Health Sciences, which was established in 1977 as the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. WesternU has developed into a comprehensive health sciences university, with nine colleges offering degrees in biomedical sciences, dental medicine, health sciences, nursing, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, podiatric medicine and veterinary medicine.

WesternU educates its students by instilling in them a philosophy championed by Dr. Pumerantz from the time he conceptualized the university: "The discipline of learning. The art of caring." He also has created a unique environment that fosters innovation and collaboration.
