Westlake Plastics Propylux HS -- The Clear Solution for Orthopedic Devices

LENNI, PA--(Marketwired - January 19, 2015) - A problem orthopedic device manufacturers routinely face is the challenge of getting polymer material validation and regulatory approvals completed in a timely and efficient manner. Now there's a way to accelerate the process by taking advantage of the biocompatibility approvals and performance capabilities of Propylux HS extruded rod. Propylux HS, produced by Westlake Plastics, was first introduced to the European orthopedic market in 2004. It has since gained broad acceptance throughout Europe as a uniquely versatile, biocompatible stock shape polymer solution for orthopedic devices intended for short duration contact (< 24H).

Propylux HS extruded rods are produced from medical grade polypropylene in 15 colors and 13 diameters. The shaped product meets the requirement of key parts of ISO 10993 including chapter 5, chapter 10 parts 1 and 2, and chapter 11. Testing was performed following GLP protocol on machined parts made from each individual color. Parts were put through a representative fabrication process typical for medical devices, including exposure to cutting fluids and cleaning solutions. GC/MS testing was performed to ensure parts were clean and free of any processing or cleaning solutions. Finished parts were steam sterilized prior to submission for biocompatibility testing.

Propylux HS has been adopted by the medical community explicitly for its excellent dimensional stability and superior chemical resistance properties. It withstands the rigors of cleaning and disinfecting agents as well as repeated steam sterilization cycles without degradation of the material properties. Propylux HS exhibits very low moisture absorption and offers a good balance of strength, toughness and ductility is easy to machine, and is laser markable.
